Professional Role

I work as an independent speech and language therapist in the field of acquired neurological disorders, seeing people in their own homes or places of residence. I specialise in stroke care, but see an increasing number of clients who have progressive cognitive decline in the form of primary progressive aphasia or dementia.

Focus of practice

I have over 40 years of experience in speech and language therapy, the first half of which was in the NHS, and the second half of which has been in independent practice. I specialise in stroke and traumatic brain injury, especially aphasia, and also see an increasing number of people with cognitive decline alongside speech and language difficulties. I am a great believer in the need for long term support for dysphasic people and often work with clients and their families well after the onset of communication difficulties.

I have always tried to work in as functional and holistic a way as possible, and the principles of PCP fit very naturally with working in this way. My experience of PCP is that it makes perfect sense as a framework for any individual and allows an understanding of someone entirely from their own perspective. This has given me an additional therapy tool in working with clients, which feels both instinctive and valuable.
